I have wagon wheel furniture (sofa and 2 chairs) that looks very similar to the one found here: http://antiques-internet.com/colorado/cowgirl/dynapage/IP986.htm Five years in the future the furniture will probably be in a den or basement, but now it is our only living room furniture and can't receive rid of it because of the sentimental value. What can I do to this furniture so it doesn't scream "wagon wheel" quite so loudly. Stain it a darker color? Buy new cushions to replace the burgundy naugahyde ones? What color/fabric should the new cushions be? I'm moving to a new place that has a fancy marble fireplace in the living room and this wagon wheel furniture just doesn't match. Thanks!

We bought a beautiful home that is perfect in every way, except for a very ugly fake fireplace. My home is traditional, but the mantel is light oak. Well, actually, it is just about perfect after I have spent 4 years and a lot of money. My last project is the fireplace, and my budget can't take a custom-made job. We are total electric so I don't have the choice of using gas. The electric fireplace w/mantel that I found at Lowe's is made of fake, cheap looking material. If I go through my decorator and her carpenter, it would be perfect, but would cost $6,000 to $10,000. I've done a lot of searching on the web, but I'm confused. I would appreciate any suggestions. My furniture is cherry, some dark antique pieces, and I have a black baby grand, so I need a fireplace that is not only functional but fits with my decor. Thanks! There is no indention into the wall. They just put Italian marble (odd) where the fireplace would be. It's every flat with the wall. I have a hand-painted screen in front of it, but it is still a useless waste of a long wall. The dimplex is beautiful. Thanks for recommending that. Not sold here, but is available within 200 miles. Such nice people here! Some of the categories have such *mad* people. I was prepared to be insulted. :)

It was a single lady who was ready to move because she didn't have any privacy on her backyard patio. They ended up putting a screen-wall in between her patio and the neighbors. This screen-wall was different because they built in a fireplace-look to it by putting a stained glass window over a mantle and then bought a fireplace front to put below the mantle. In the "faux" fireplace, I believe they put that wavy glass. On both sides of the "fireplace" they built the wall out but left open spaces in between the frame for her to hang outdoor lamps. They bought the fireplace front at an antique store I believe. It was a beautiful way to receive privacy and yet have a unique look of a fireplace.

My family room has traditional British hunt scenes and I have a big oil painting centered on the wall over the fireplace. On one side of the mantle, I have 2 antique brass candlesticks and a cherry wood desk clock. I used to have a green plant in an old Limoges flowered pot on the other side, but it died. I would like to do something other than a plant, but it has to be at least 10 inches tall. The mantle is natural oak. Any idea?

House is currently 80's country. The woodwork is lt golden oak, white cabinetry & shiny hardware, shiny brass glass fixtures - my style is Tuscan, darker woods, marble, iron, wealthy earth tones. Mission also appeals to me, again, medium to dark woods, black iron, ect. I am repainting the entire interior - walls & ceilings - that's already in the budget & is top priority. I'm thinking a shade similar to latte but w/ a neutral to slightly warm cast to it due to the woodwork. I want to incorporate as much antique looking black accent as possible, I adore the old look & I have a lot wrought iron decor pieces. For furniture, I'm thinking leather, classic medium brown leather sofa/seat, need to find a dining table that is that lt wood, hopefully with some black iron accents. The LR has a rock fireplace, though it's grey instead of tan which seems odd to me. Very tight budget - suggestions to incorporate my tastes into this home? Photos for ideas? What type of hardware would you suggest? Repainting the cabinets, as much as I would adore to, isn't really practical right now. I can't afford to have them done and it's just not possible for me to do them myself at this point in time & have them look nice. What about window treatments? I'm a "less is more" person. I'd like matching iron hardware on every the windows but not sure what nice of curtains I want. There are bright white wooden blinds on the bedroom windows but not the living room/dining room. Privacy wise, I'm ok with sheers though ... Color suggestions? I also really like plants and am thinking some hanging drapping type plants in front of the big dining window (which faces back yard) would add a degree of privacy but not block too much light and view. I saw some pretty wroung iron hangning pots that were inexpensive. I just don't want to go overboard with the black.

Ok...We re-painted our apartment last night. The walls are a Peanut Butter color (the name is Cracker Bitz) and the Baseboards, windows, crown-molding and ceiling are an Antique White (color is Oats) We have honey colored hardwood floors. The fireplace is the same color as the trim except for it has Terra Cotta and Dark Brown mixed in. I am going for an Earthy feel. Straight outta nature. I plan to add lots of greenery, bamboo and moss decor. Anyone have any ideas for decorations that I can make myself or a site that has something like that? Thanks

I am refinishing two pieces of furniture for my living room. One is an oak coffee table (very big and modern). The other is a tiny antique wardrobe (some may refer to this as a chifforobe) that is about 5 ft tall. This piece is also very square without detail and mirror doors. I'm adding this to the living room for an "anchor" and additional storage. The wall colors are a tan (can't remember the exact name) and one accent wall that is an olive green (this a corner wall with a fireplace and only about 6 feet wide). sofa is a brown leather with black feet and TV stand is black. I was thinking of staining both pieces with an ebony, but I am also considering a color stain possibly a green. I need help deciding. These are two pieces that have sentimental value and I plan on keeping forever so I want to use a color that is versatile. That's why I was leaning toward ebony. However, the green would really add color. Or should I stain the wardrobe one color and the table another???

I have a tiny living room, with a fireplace, off white walls, brown/beige carpet, and deep red couches. I have a framed picture of an antique magnolia blossom hanging over the fireplace. Its set in a gold frame. On the wall opposite the fireplace I have a huge mirror hanging over the sofa. The frame around the mirror is a wealthy brown. The other wall leads out to a patio so I have a huge patio window/door that I would adore to hang curtains over. The last wall has a window and is in the entry way to the living room. In the entry way the tile is brown, tan, and white. Every color of curtains I pick out does not match anything. Any idea for colors or how to tie the room togther. I just moved and would adore some help.

For those interior decorators out there.... I live in an apartment and decorating is difficult. This apt has forest green carpet (I know lol) but I like this apt because it has a built in bar between the kitchen and living room. I decided to go with a wine bar theme for the place. focal point in the living room is an elec. fireplace, dark espresso finish. Modern coffee /end tables also in espresso, dark chocolate modern leather sofa and chairs, and ottomans... bright burgundy accents and pillows. Now, everything so far is modern.... I want to use every old world style accessories. Can I do this? I have antique leather bound books, treasure chests, wrought iron wall hangings and candle holders, antique pendulum clock , and tiffany style lamps. Finished color scheme would be dark brown, burgundy/wine, forest green, off white (walls), and some gold and wrought iron. Can I mix modern furniture with old world style accessories and receive away with it, or is this a no no in design circles?

Ignore the mess on the antique turntable - my kids left it for me.... I think the area over the fireplace needs something, but the space over the tv I'm most worried about. I'm trying to spend as little as possible. http://tinyurl.com/37c6ka http://tinyurl.com/2ul7uw Last one is dark but it gives an idea to the amount of space between the prints: http://tinyurl.com/39j4qt I found 2 different 12 x 12 canvases at Target, to possibly go inbetween: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_3/601-7900187-9652122?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000PUO5ZG Or this sconce, but DH doesn’t want more candles: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_3/601-79001879652122ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000PUO5ZG Other idea from Kohls: http://www.kohls.com/main/subcategory.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=421053949&bmUID=1183956942645 TIA!!

We are considering a Vermont Castings propane fireplace insert. It comes with 30000 BTU's...I think I have that correct, with the option to turn it down. Our livingroom is about 13 X 18. I'm worried that the room may become uncomfortably hot. Any opinions? Also, there's a great deal of styles. Has anyone got an opinion regarding "every black" or antique brass, etc? And you can receive one with a bay window and I don't know if that's nicer or not. Lots of decisions! And "radiant" or "circulating"? I understand the pilot light stays on every the time. They say they're very safe.....I wish so! Thanks for any input. gere

I have a very tiny(400sq. ft.) cottage that I would like to decorate in the french country style. I adore a more sparse and eclectic look and wish to include some antiques. There are 3 rooms...galley kitchen, fairly good size bath and a main rm/bedroom with a big rock fireplace. Any ideas on where to look for funiture and design ideas. Money and a budget is an issue so please don't send me to high-end spots. adore them but can't afford them. Thanks for the ideas...I look forward to your answers. Edit: Yowza...I've looked at their catalog before. How's the quality and construction? I like the styles, but I don't know anyone who has order from them before...Thanks.

I'm wanting to put a fireplace in my living room and someone offered to give me the gas log flame box. I can clip a hole in my sheetrock wall and it will go into an unused kitchen cabinet in the room on the other side of wall. Would it be safe to slide the logs and firebox into the wall? What precautions need to be taken or should I not try it at every - dangerous?

Well, I want to toss a party at my home, my parents give me permission and will not be there when the party is taking place. I can use the entire home and everything. I can decorate whatever I want and invite whoever I want, maybe 20 people? I'm new so I only know like 5 people so far :/ I can just nice of invite whoever seems nice and fun. It will be a party with 13-15 year olds. My home is an average 2 story home so I don't know what to really do or how to decorate. Plus the main room where we will be is like a 'family room'. It has paintings, a fireplace, an antique clock, and an antique boat model. I know this is the worst place to toss a party but it's the largest room in the home and it's downstairs with the TV and stuff. I have no idea what to do. I have to toss it at my home but my home just isn't the best place because of the whole 'antique old people vibe'. Well, any advice? Thanks.

My living room is about 22 x 16 and 3 of the 4 walls have knotty pine. Long wall with front door and big picture window and two tiny walls. One wall also has brick fireplace (no mantel). The shelf at the flame place is rock or slate? It makes my living room so dark and old looking. I dont want to paint it but to remove every that will take a lot. The stain is rather dark and every walls wood is in good shape except the tiny wall has knicks in it from a rocker or something. My one wall in the dining room also has this... None of it goes with what theme or style I would like to have... Dining room is currently baskets and americana colors. the only thing I can look that works with that is the lines in a basket. Living room, I like the Victorian look, antique, whites, washed colors. What is the best way to brighten it up?

We recently purchased an older home (built 1941) and there are several built in cabinets and a fireplace made of oak. The furniture came with the home, is antique and is the same color of the cabinets and the fireplace. It's an orange-ish looking wood and is difficult to decorate around. I really do prefer the deeper, darker wood colors (so does my husband). Can I sand and restain the wood darker without worrying about ruining the wood? It's so old.

We just moved into a tiny apt (rental) and the living room is stark white. Im thinking about painting (must be a netural non dramatic color due to renting) but there is a faux fireplace and im unsure how to go about the whole project. Should I leave it the same color as the walls, should the mantle be a diff color than the face of it, should I use a technique such as antiquing????? Right now everything is white. The fireplace was at one time gas (there is still a tiny conecter that you can look) but we just have some decorative candles in it. It is also hollow and is almost "spackled" (not sure if thats right) Any tips, ideas, suggestions would be great.

We're looking for a Victorian or Edwardian fireplace and also a rock lintel as we need to fit a side door into a rock listed building. We might also need a few other stuff like Victorian or Edwardian taps and radiators. Anyway, does anyone know of an antique junkyard/salvage yard close to Manchester or inbetween Manchester to Bolton (even in the surroundings of Bolton)? Just in case it helps anyone reading this question I've discovered another http://www.insitumanchester.com/ Thanks for the answer below though - good site and much appreciated.

I am planning to buy new furniture for our living room and need help with ideas for furniture to buy and how to position it. It's a big, rectangular room that's our only family/living room - most of the time we use it for watching TV, playing with the kids, etc. but it's also where we entertain guests, so it needs to be presentable. Here's the layout: in the middle of one long wall, there's a fireplace, which is lovely, and should probably be the focal point of any sofa set-up. On one short wall we have a flat-screen TV mounted, and on the opposite short wall there's a huge picture window that faces on to the road. On each long wall there are a pair of windows, which makes it a little difficult to position furniture against the wall. You enter the room from the corner adjoining the wall with the TV and the wall opposite the fireplace. We're replacing old furniture and starting from square one, except for an antique Persian carpet that covers about two-thirds the floor. Any ideas?

The painting I think is by max carlier. In the bottom right hand corner it is signed in reddish orangish paint and I think it is his signature you know with the elongated r that drags down vertically below his signature. It was very difficult to read, I had to receive a magnifying glass and flashlight. The painting is of 2 or 3 men sitting in a living area with a lit fireplace. The men are either carving or playing a wooden instrument or wooden instruments. Does anyone know if Max Carlier painted something like this. The women in the antique store said it was over 100 years old. I know it is nice of vague, but any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have been cleaning this guys home for 18 years. He is now on his thrid wife since I have been there. He and his newest wife (of about 4 years) are incorporating houses and they are adding lots of new knick knack, furniture etc. some of the stuff is coming from his mothers two houses. She is in a nursing home and won't be coming out. I have asked this guy how is mom is doing, as I have met her a few times over the years. Everytime I ask him he says "oh we are just waiting for her to die"..Tells you what nice of person he is (although he has always been nice to me).. Anyway, with every this new stuff they are bringing in....the put a fireplace screen around a raised propane fireplace. The screen is the type where the two sides fold in. Then infront of the wobblly screen, they put three glass candleholders. Well when i was dusting this new screen, i did not realize that it was so wobbly so I grabbed one side of the screen and the other side hinged backward and knocked two of the candleholders off of the fireplace down about 18 inches to the floor. needless to say they both broke into about a hundred pieces. I put the pieces of glass into a plastic bag and left it on the fireplace. I wrote a note explaining what happened, that I was very sorry, and that I would pay for them if he wanted me to. I called him the next day and said Hi Joe, how are you? he said, well i'm doing better than my wife. and he explained that she had just brought the candlesticks home from his "dear" mothers home this weekend, and that she was looking up the glass on the internet and that I shouldn't worry about it right now. He said he told his wife that she should not put out anything thats valuable. NOW like I said I have been cleaning this mans home for 18 years and have not broken one thing in the past..and now every of a sudden this glass was his dear mothers antique candleholder. Now keep in mind that in 4 years I have never met the new wife. She seems to uppity to be concerned about me. I am willing to pay for the candlesticks, within reason....but it bothers me that he may be trying inflate the cost, especially when i know how he really feels about his mom. I do feel that if he asks me to pay, even if it is a nominal amount I will no longer be working there. I feel 18 years without breaking anything, is a pretty good record and accidents happen. He has recommended me to four of his friends, whom I did not have time to clean for so it tells me that he is glad with my service. ... Please give me your thoughts..thanks

I have an old picture 30 w x 20 h on cardboard and framed . Measurements don't include frame .The frame is gold painted color and holds picture in with tiny nails The picture is of two women dressed like they did in Civil War days. This dream was really weird but I wrote everything down in my dream journal once I awoke so I remember a lot of little details. In the beginning of my dream I was bathing in the ocean. It was night but a very bright night with lots of moonlight and glittering silver stars. There was a huge full moon overhead. I could hear the sound of pretty chines in the air. Flamingos were flying over the ocean and the ocean was filled with frogs. I was watching a duck and drake swimming together in ocean when I spotted a mermaid and I was pleasantly surprised because I had never seen one before. We swam together before I was startled by the sound of cymbals crashing and I saw my fiancé, Arvind. He swam out and we made adore in the ocean. I noticed his eyes were darker and he smelled of allspice. Then we went onto land. I felt very affectionate towards him so I caught a gander that was in the ocean and gave it to him as a gift. He was so pleased he gave me three presents: bouquets of gardenia, forsythia, forget me nots, daffodils, acacia, lavender, jasmine, honeysuckle, nightshade, lotus, and lilies of the valley, four cards (ace, king, queen and jack of hearts) and a cone-shaped aquamarine and ruby amulet. Then I started talking about how I had to do my Christmas shopping because it was Christmas day. We walked into town bare foot in the dew and went to an antique store that looked really quaint and old-fashioned. There were pigeons on the windowsill outside. I was looking at antiques and finally purchased some oil. Arvind then said that because I bought oil we had to marry and we rode on a donkey to some wedding banquet. The banquet was held in a beautiful cemetery. There was a long table with a feast prepared. Two canaries were in a cage on the table as a centerpiece. Incense was lit, a harp and organ were playing. Nightingales were in trees. There was an outdoor fireplace burning. Arvind was dressed as a knight. I was dressed in an ivory, lace wedding dress, the amulet and was barefoot still. We were eating celery, avocado, cake, apricot, dates, chestnuts, olives, ripe cherries, ginger, honey, jam, lamb, pumpkin, maple sugar, oysters, pickles, strawberries, and ice cream sodas. We were eating off good china and drank wine and a sweet, syrupy drink from Crystal goblets. Our wedding guests were elk and fairies. A barmaid approached me and said about Arvind, “he’s the one”. Then one of the waiters served a dead deer and I was disgusted and insisted he removed the dead deer. A unicorn came on the scene and roared like a lion and then turned into a palm tree. A lunar eclipse took place and it became very dark. In the tree was my abusive ex-husband dressed as a boat captain in black nylon. He was sitting in the pal tree with three snakes, an adder, a python and a rattlesnake around his neck and a crow was on his shoulder. Caterpillars and lizards were at feet of the tree. He offered me a bouquet of opium poppies and primroses as a wedding gift and I rejected it. He came down off the tree and an alligator, fox, leopard and snarling dog came to his side. He went into a jealous rage telling me I should have been his wife and I was crazy not to and he took me to an asylum. Arvind chased us down and turned into a polar bear and Nikolas turned into a black bear and began to battle. I put on a white velvet cloak with a garland of garlic around my neck and Arvind gave me a blade and I found Nikolas-bear and killed him. After he died every his animal companions died and it became light again. A rainbow appeared and doves were flying overhead. Then we cooked the Nikolas-bear corpse and went back to our wedding banquet and ate that too. Then I awoke

Help! I want to totally re-do my living room...I have already purchased the sofa/loveseat (dark brown leather) and carpet has been put down (a sage green). It is a tiny room, with a brick fireplace/wood mantle. My taste is pretty ecclectic: I adore antiques and that whole *shabby* thing. We are very laid back and want comfort and function over every, and I want everyone who walks in to feel 'at home'. Does anyone know where I can pick up some ideas for decorating? I am sleepy of my old stuff and I am replacing it every--my problem is I don't have a clue or direction on where to go or what to do. Any books/magazines/websites anyone recommends?

The previous owner of my home painted the entire interior an Antique White (satin, except the kitchen and bathroom which are semi-gloss) including every of the walls, front, rear and side doors, floor trim, door trim, closet trim, etc which makes it every look a bit boring. I had considered painting the trim along the floors/doors/closets white (semi-gloss?) to add some much needed contrast but I have heard that may cause the antique white on the walls to look "dingy" Other features of note in the home are a big red brick fireplace with black cast iron wood stove in the living room, the carpet is nice of a steel grey berber throughout, the kitchen and bathroom both have a wood grain vinyl flooring, and every of the interior doors (bedrooms, closets) are wood also. It's every a bit overwhelming (in the dull sense) with too much of the antique white on the one hand and wood on the other! I need help! Any suggestions for guy with no color sense? (yes maybe thats a bit redundant!) In the living room the primary piece of furniture is a blue sectional. As far as the other rooms go there isn't much in the way of furniture as I just moved in so I can receive things to match later after painting. The wood interior doors are somewhat dark, I don't know what nice though.

I have a Victorian home with a number of open fireplaces. The previous owner removed one and left it in the garden. I want to renovate it and put it back - but not to use just for decoration. The old fireplace is in several bits and i don't know what fits where. Can someone point me to a good website that shows the construction of a fireplace?
